The first wine cellar operated by the Dragone family was run by Antonio Dragone in the 19th century. The wine cellar was next to the Domenican Convent, in the historic heart of the city of Matera. Around the year 1920, Michele Dragone founded the famous cellar in Via S. Biagio, which at the time was the heart of agricultural society in Matera. The Dragone family first put its label on a bottle of wine in 1955. Over the course of the years, wine production was shifted to the Tenuta di Pietrapenta, which is about 12 kilometers from the city. Today, the Dragone Winery produces about 10,000 hectoliters of wine a year, only from vineyards owned by the winery itself, and including a number of typical Lucanian varieties.
The Dragone Winery is a founding member of the ‘Consorzio di Tutela Vini Matera D.O.C.The Consortium for the Protection of D.O.C. Materan Wines. It has produced the first bottles of wine with a Denomination of Controlled Origin label. The winery has been producing spumante wines since 1997, using the noble process of the classic method, from Malvasia Bianca di Basilicata grapes and, exclusively and uniquely, from Primitivo di Matera grapes. The wines produced by the Dragone family are, and always have been, the fruit of the unique terroir of the Matera area, but are also the fruit of the love, passion, history and tradition of this quiet, generous land, with its humble, dignified people, of a city of extraordinary beauty and enchantment that gathers strength from the sacrifices and sufferings of the past, which grant Matera its strength and nobility so that today it can be appreciated in all its splendour!
The Dragone Winery has always understood that it is an important component of the food and wine sector of this city, and is immensely proud of this fact!![]()
